WALTER STANLEY PAGET

"The editor of the Strand was seeking an illustrator and remembered an artist named Paget who had been a representative for the Illustrated London News with the Gordon Relief Expedition. He forgot his christian name, however, and sent the letter of commission to my father (Sidney Paget), instead of Walter." --Winifred Paget

At some point in time you KNOW it was said: No, I am NOT going to hell for STEALING your Sherlock Holmes commission. Cut out the whining, Wal, or I'll give you a sound thrashing!

From the book "War Illustrators"

"Walter Paget and his brother Sidney were well-known illustrators who worked for books and the picture papers. Walter Paget's only campaign as a war correspondent appears to have been the Gordon Relief Expedition, where he provided some interesting sketches of camp life which the Illustrated London News reproduced in facsimile. He was with General Sir Gerald Graham's army at the British base of Suakin on the Red Sea, and accompanied them to Tamai in 1884.

"Among the books that Walter Paget illustrated were Treasure Island-1899, Pilgrim's Progress-1906, and Arabian Nights-1907. He and his brother became staff artists for the Sphere when it was founded in 1900."
