The Lighthouse.
by S.E. Paget (age 14)

The wind howled dismally over the sea,
And the rain beat down on the shore,
When gallantly swept a brave barque through
the gale,
In the din of the tempest's roar.

Its sails were unfurled, and it sprang through
the waves,
Like a warrior charging the lists,
And the seagulls and petrels flew screaming
along,
As they followed the ship through the mists.

To warn off the ships from the death-dealing rocks,
The lamp of the lighthouse burned bright, ---
And the vessel that sped on its storm-beaten way,
Went safe through the dangers of night.

So the roaring of wind and the raging of wave
To the vessel no evil entailed,
For the lighthouse, the mariner's guide through the gloom,
Helped the ship on its course as it sailed.
